Other ways of committing to be safe are:

  • Ask a friend or family member to drive you to the Crisis Center or Hospital Emergency Dept.
  • Contact your support team (doctor, psychiatrist, therapist, case manager, social worker etc.) Schedule an appointment with your therapist on the same day or next business day
  • Call 911

People experiencing suicidality can be effectively treated by licensed mental health professionals and other health care providers with individually tailored strategies to help address emotional, psychological and physical needs without engaging in self-destructive behaviors.

Signs of Immediate Risk for Suicide: Some behaviors may mean a person is at immediate risk for suicide such as:
  • Talking about wanting to die or to kill oneself
  • Looking for a way to kill oneself; such as searching online or obtaining lethal means (examples: medications, sharp objects, and firearms)
  • Talking about feeling hopeless or having no reason to live

Other behavior may indicate a serious risk of suicide–especially if the behavior is new; has increased; and/or seems related to a painful event, loss, or change:

  • Talking about feeling trapped or in unbearable pain
  • Talking about being a burden to others
  • Increasing/Increased use of alcohol or other drugs
  • Acting anxious or agitated; behaving recklessly
  • Sleeping too little or too much
  • Withdrawing or feeling isolated
  • Showing rage or talking about seeking revenge
  • Displaying extreme mood swings
